Croatia vs Italy Euro 2024: Last-Gasp Equaliser Stuns Croatia

Zaccagni's Late Goal Denies Croatia Victory

Match Report

Mattia Zaccagni scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser as Italy fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Croatia in their Euro 2024 Group B opener on Monday. The match looked set to end in a Croatia win after Nikola Vlasic had fired them into an early lead, but Zaccagni's 95th-minute strike salvaged a point for the Italians.

Croatia started the match brightly and took the lead in the 12th minute when Vlasic capitalised on a poor clearance from Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The goal seemed to stun Italy, and Croatia continued to dominate possession for much of the first half.

Italy improved after the break and gradually began to get more of a foothold in the game. They came close to equalising in the 65th minute when Ciro Immobile hit the post, but Croatia held on to their lead.

However, Italy continued to press, and in the dying moments of the match, they were rewarded for their efforts. Zaccagni met a cross from Federico Chiesa and fired home from close range to level the scores.

The draw leaves both teams with a point after their opening matches, with Italy facing Switzerland and Croatia taking on the Czech Republic in their next games.
